Aromas of iodine, pipe tobacco and red fruits follow through to a full body, with soft and silky tannins and intense flavors of tar, berry, and licorice. Beautiful texture too. Long and seductive. Really excellent.—'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. 11,000 cases made.
The 1988 Pape-Clement has a striking, youthful, minty nose without the complexity of either the 1989 or 1990, without the same level of aromatic delineation. The palate is full-bodied with rather burly tannins, good density and structure here, quite dry and masculine but with sufficient fruit concentration to keep it in balance, with notes of black olive, pain grille, a touch of mushroom, smoke and cigar box. Good length and vivacity. It will not improve any further, but one has to admire the solidity and unashamed conservatism of this wine. Drink now-2017+
Medium bodied, fully mature, with cassis, cranberry, earth, tobacco, cedar and forest floor notes, there is a hint of rusticity in the tannins and some green notes in the red berry finish that is going to appeal to old school tasters. Successful for the vintage, this is slightly on the classic, austere side of the style range. There is no reason to age this any longer. by jkeff leve in 2013
